Happy 4/20! Here's How Some California Teens Created a Global Phenomenon

Are you ready for 4/20?

We are - and why wouldn't we be? People all over the world gather to light up, listen to music, and show their support for the benefits of cannabis.

Whether you "take hits from the bong" or campaign to "legalize it", 4/20 is a day for people to celebrate the marijuana plant (and get great deals at the dispensaries).

But, how did this number, time and date become such a big deal to stoners? One popular story is that 4/20 originated as a police code for marijuana possession in California. Nope, that story has been debunked by Snopes.

Actually, the origin actually goes back to the 70s when a group of high school students in California who called themselves "the Waldos" would meet up at 4:20 pm to smoke some pot after school. They even used "420" as code to refer to their smoking activities.

Over time, 4/20 became more widely recognized as a day to celebrate marijuana culture and, in recent years, an opportunity for people to learn about the benefits of marijuana in medical treatments and the potential economic benefits of legalization.

So there you have it, hopefully it was exactly what you thought it was going to be or at least what you hoped it would be.

Happy 4/20!
